Tour Description

Are you an avid cyclist? Or do you enjoy a leisure pedal along the river? Either way, the Biking the Poudre River tour is perfect for you. Spend the day biking from Fort Collins all the way to Greeley – almost. The Poudre River Trail starts on Rist Canyon Road (there is no public parking here) off highway 287 to Colorado State University’s Environmental Learning Center in Fort Collins. The trail starts back up across the I-25 interstate at River Bluffs Open Space and ends at Island Grove Regional Park in Greeley. The paved trail makes for a great half day adventure in the Cache la Poudre River National Heritage Area!

Half Day Itinerary in Fort Collins, CO

Your adventure begins at Colorado State University’s Environmental Learning Center (ELC) on East Drake Road in Fort Collins. There is plenty of parking available at the ELC.

Half Day Itinerary in Windsor/Greeley, CO

Your adventure begins at River Bluffs Open Space, the newest extension to the Poudre River Trail with a shaded parking lot, restrooms and a water fountain. Sheep Draw Trail has additional parking if River Bluffs is full. Sheep Draw Trail connects to the Poudre River Trail after 3.68 miles.

Silver Grill Café

Stop 1: Town of Windsor

Eastman Park

Eastman Park, located in Windsor, is a 25-acre turf-covered park with ample parking, indoor restrooms, drinking fountains, a play area for children and a picnic shelter. The Poudre River Trial runs along the south side of the park. This is a great place to take a break on a warm day. Learn more.

Windsor Lake

If you want to extend your ride, head north into the Town of Windsor from Eastman Park to enjoy Windsor Lake Trail, 2.25 miles around Windsor Lake. Learn more.

From Old Town, you will ride through Buckingham Park and Lee Martinez Park as you head northwest out of Fort Collins towards Laporte. Don’t be alarmed when the trail veers away from the river because it will connect back at Lions Open Space in Laporte.

Return to Eastman Park to continue on the Poudre River Trail. As you head east towards Greeley on the trail, you will travel through Signature Bluffs Natural Area, a vast area of natural river habitat with a large pond, cottonwood stands, cattails and meadows. Your journey will come to an end at Island Grove Park, a site once used by the Arapahoe and Ute tribes. It is now a multi-use park and event complex. Shade, restrooms, drinking fountains, and ample parking is available.

1883 Water Works Historic Site

The facility was built in 1882-1883 to provide the growing town of Fort Collins with an adequate supply of water for fighting the building fires that plagued the early town. Learn more.

Stop 2: Greeley

Santiago's Mexican Restaurant

About a mile south of the park on 11th Avenue is Santiago’s Mexican Restaurant, established in 1991, is dedicated to providing the best Mexican good that is authentic, affordable, and always fresh. Their Chile was made by Rachel Morales, owner Carmen Morales’ mother, by roasting Jalapenos on the grill. “If it was not spicy, he [Micel Morales, father] would say it was not any good,” said Carmen. Wiley Roots Brewing Company

Wiley Roots Brewing Company, located south of the park right on the Cache la Poudre River, was founded in 2013 with a focus on unique beer crafted from the highest quality ingredients. There is no food truck available, but they offer an array of hand-crafted brews, non-alcoholic beverages and a rotating feature of mocktails. Learn more.

WeldWerks Brewing Company

Established in 2015, WeldWerks Brewing Co. is a locally owned crafter brewery, recognized for brewing an array of beer styles including Juicy Bits, one of the most highly regarded IPAs in the country, and creating chef-driven and intentionally crafted diches in its in-house kitchen. Jenny’s Malt Shop & Diner

Jenny’s Malt Shop & Diner has been family owned and operated for over 25 years. The store offers sweets and diner food. On the sweet side of things, there is Hawaiian shave ice, fizzlers, shakes and malts all available in over 100 flavors, in addition to floats, sundaes, ice cream, popcorn, churros, and funnel cakes. After leaving Laporte, the trail will follow U.S. 287 highway for 1 mile to Vern’s Place. After a stop into the historic building, the trail turns left onto Rist Canyon Road for 0.9 miles to Watson Lake State Wildlife Area. The gravel parking lot where the trail ends is part of Watson Lake State Wildlife Area. A valid hunting or fishing license OR SWA pass is required for everyone 16 or older accessing this area. You can ride the extra mile along Rist Canyon Road, or you can turn around at Vern’s Place and head back to Old Town Fort Collins for your final stop of the day.

Restrooms and drinking water are available at Lee Martinez Park, Old Fort Collins Heritage, River Bluffs Open Space, Kodak Watchable Wildlife Area, Poudre Learning Center, Buckingham Parks, and Island Grove Park. There is also a drinking fountain at Kingfisher Point Natual Area. Note: These facilities may be closed for the winter season.

Traveler Tips

Fort Collins is nestled against the foothills of the Rocky Mountains alongside the banks of the Cache la Poudre River. The city lies approximately 5,000 feet above sea level. Greeley is east of the Rocky Mountains in the High Plains of northern Colorado. The city lies approximately 4,600 feet above sea level. At high elevations, proper hydration, breathable layers, and sun protection are necessities.
